Spares are being tendered by make and model, which hands the aftermarket to the original manufacturer

Five reads on what India makes and how it makes it this week.

The Award

The Operator · The Innovator · The Intelligence Yield

Thread: thermal-extensionSince last time the same decision shows up as equipment. A fleet that is being kept running buys motors, not units.

NTPC Limited awarded a contract for 3.3 kilovolt high tension motors for Rihand and North Karanpura on 1 October

The award of contract for the procurement of 3.3 kV high tension motors for NTPC Rihand and North Karanpura was recorded on 1 October 2026, against a tender e-published on 4 June.

High tension motor replacement at a thermal station is not expansion. It is the kind of purchase a fleet makes when it intends to keep running the asset, and it sits alongside the cooling tower, ash dyke and boiler steel work awarded in the same window.

Who should act

High tension motor manufacturers and rewinding specialists, drives and switchgear suppliers, and rotating equipment service companies.

The winner and the contract value sit behind the award link on the NTPC portal under Results of Tenders. Open the record before pricing your next bid on this account.

The Shift ◆

A compressor stripped for overhaul, with the same make of machine lined up behind it, shows how spares follow the original equipment. Illustrative.

Spares are being tendered by make and model, which hands the aftermarket to the original manufacturer

Elgi make compressor spares and lubricants at Mouda. Chhabi make direct current battery charger spares on a biennial rate contract. Fuji Electric make uninterruptible power supply systems at Vindhyachal. SEL make numerical relays at Mouda. Chloride make battery chargers at Tanda. Prayas make electric hoists at Mouda.

The competition is between distributors of one brand, not between brands. That is a decision taken years earlier, at the point the equipment was specified.

Who should act

Original equipment manufacturers and their authorised distributors, spares importers, maintenance contractors, and sales engineers pricing an initial equipment sale.

Next step

Price your next equipment sale with the aftermarket in view. On this buyer's board the brand named at installation holds the spares for the life of the asset.

The Window

The Innovator · The Operator · The Compute Layer

A water treatment train under construction, the vessels and pipework that feed an electrolyser hub. Illustrative.

An EPC package for a 10 MLD de-mineralisation plant at the green hydrogen hub at Pudimadaka closes on 15 October

NTPC Limited has an EPC package open for the development of a 10 million litre per day de-mineralisation plant for the NTPC Green Energy Limited green hydrogen hub at Pudimadaka in Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh. It closes 15 October 2026 at 1:00 pm.

Water treatment is the part of a hydrogen project that gets built first and talked about least. An electrolyser needs de-mineralised feed water, and at hub scale that is a process plant in its own right. The package is open now, ahead of the electrolyser scope.

Who should act

Water treatment and de-mineralisation plant builders, reverse osmosis and ion exchange suppliers, process piping and instrumentation contractors, and civil contractors working in Anakapalli district.

Next step

If you are tracking Indian hydrogen for the electrolyser order, watch the water packages instead. They close first and they tell you the sequence.

Dates to mark

Closes 15 October 2026 at 1:00 pm.

The Number

The Operator · The Intelligence Yield

Sixty three of NTPC Limited's 421 live tenders are spares lines

One in seven of everything open at India's largest generator is a spares purchase. Supply orders account for another 121, and maintenance contracts for 80. Against that, four EPC packages and two consultancies. The opportunity is in parts, labour and consumables rather than in projects.

Who should act

Spares distributors and importers, original equipment manufacturers' service arms, industrial consumables suppliers, and maintenance contractors.

Next step

If you cover this account with a projects team, cover it with a parts team instead. Fifteen of every sixteen lines on the board are not projects.

The Pattern

The Strategist · The Intelligence Yield

A half-dismantled industrial gearbox on a pallet in a long factory bay with roof trusses receding into the distance.
A gearbox stripped down for overhaul in a heavy-engineering maintenance bay, the kind of upkeep work now dominating public sector procurement. Illustrative.

India's public sector manufacturers are buying upkeep twenty times faster than they are buying plant

On the largest industrial procurement board in the country the ratio is explicit: 80 maintenance contracts against four EPC packages, and 63 spares lines against two consultancies. This is a sector whose installed base is now large enough that keeping it running is the main activity.

Who should act

Industrial service companies, maintenance contractors, spares and consumables suppliers, and manufacturers deciding whether to build a service division.

Next step

If you sell equipment into Indian public sector buyers and have no service business, that is the gap. The upkeep market is twenty times the frequency of the build market.
