NTPC awarded 39 contracts in a single week, and seven of them were coal haulage

NTPC awarded 39 contracts in a single week, and seven of them were coal haulage

In the week of 28 September to 4 October, NTPC Limited's award of contract stream recorded 39 awards. Seven were coal haulage and four specified rail-cum-road mode.

Against a live board of 497 tenders that is overwhelmingly spares, services and maintenance, the shape of the buying is clear. This is an operator running assets hard, not one building new ones.

The award figures were read on 4 October 2026 and the live board count on 11 October. They are two separate reads, not a series.

Who should act

Coal logistics operators, rail and road haulage contractors, and anyone selling consumables or maintenance into thermal generation. Consumables, spares, maintenance and logistics, are priority areas.

Next step

Sell NTPC consumables, spares, maintenance and logistics, not plant. The rail-cum-road specification in four of seven haulage awards says the constraint being solved is evacuation flexibility rather than cost.

The Shift

CTU creates a pathway to expand battery storage on existing grid grants

The Central Transmission Utility (CTU) issued an advisory on 14 September 2026 detailing how battery storage projects with existing grid connectivity can expand their storage capacity in megawatt (MW) hours.

Until now, developers wanting to expand storage beyond their original grant had no clear regulatory pathway.

The date and title of the advisory were verified. Its contents were not read.

Who should act

Battery cell and container suppliers, power conversion system manufacturers, balance of plant contractors, and developers holding active connectivity grants.

Next step

This is a retrofit market. Map which grant holders have storage in scope and approach them before the first enhancement applications are filed.

Two Madhya Pradesh transmission packages set for transfer in late December

PFC Consulting Limited has published RfPs for both halves of the common transmission system augmentation serving NTPC Limited's 2x800 MW Gadarwara-II thermal station alongside 1,500 MW of renewable capacity at Mandsaur. The scope is split across two independent transmission project packages. Part A is an independent transmission project 143 and Part B is 145.

Both special purpose vehicles (SPV) are scheduled for transfer on 28 December 2026, which is seventy seven days from today. Commissioning runs 36 months from transfer.

Who should act

Transmission service providers bidding concessions, substation contractors and equipment manufacturers.

Next step

This is one of the few packages pairing thermal evacuation with renewable integration on the same system, so the bidder needs both capabilities. For suppliers the buyer is identified and the clock to transfer is public.

Dates to mark

Expected SPV transfer 28 December 2026.

636 connectivity records on the national register, 109 are scheduled to become effective within the next twelve months

Out of the 636 renewable projects holding a connectivity grant on the national register, 109 are due to have that connectivity made effective between 1 October 2026 and 30 September 2027.

Who should act

Solar module and wind turbine suppliers, engineering procurement and construction contractors, land aggregators, and project financiers.

Next step

Identify the 109 projects and prioritise developers by location, capacity and connectivity date. Use the schedule to assess upcoming equipment, construction and financing opportunities.

The Pattern

The transmission opportunity clock is public at all six stages

An Indian transmission line passes through six public stages before construction starts. It begins with CTU scheme publication, survey consultant appointments, and tariff-based bidding approval, before advancing through RFP release with SPV incorporation, concession award, and operational grid connectivity that triggers generator procurement.

Four schemes followed this sequence this quarter: Kadapa-II, Gadarwara-II and Mandsaur, Solapur Phase II and Karur.

Who should act

Transmission equipment suppliers, tower and conductor manufacturers, substation contractors, and concession developers.

Next step

Most companies wait until stage four, when the formal tender opens and leaves just three weeks to bid. Stage two is published, free and roughly eighteen months earlier. Move your alert.
