The thermal fleet is being maintained like an airline, not a power station

Five reads on what Indian industry is buying and building this week.

The Award

A 500 MW generator rotor is going back to BHEL Haridwar to be repaired

NTPC has a live service contract for the repairing of the 500 MW generator rotor from its Farakka station at BHEL's Haridwar works.

Alongside it sit the refurbishment of nozzles and blades of a GE Frame 9E gas turbine at Kawas, the reclamation and reconditioning of primary air tube and banjo assemblies for Lara's coal burners, the assessment and repair of Rexroth servo valves at Gadarwara, and the revival of a stacker hydraulic system at Rihand.

Who should act

Heavy engineering shops with metallurgy and balancing capability. Anyone selling replacement rotating equipment. Refurbishment is a growing revenue line and it is being routed back through the original manufacturer's own works.

Next step

If you sell replacement units, your competitor is now a repair quote. Price against refurbishment, not against another new machine.

The Shift

The Operator · The Guardian · The Multinational Mandate

NTPC has stopped buying spares and started signing rate contracts with the makers

A dedicated vendor development cell and vendor enablement cell inside NTPC's central supply organisation are running multi-year rate contracts directly with original equipment manufacturers.

Live today: a rate contract with BHEL Trichy for safety valve and electromatic relief valve spares, a rate contract for Enerpac hydraulic jacks and pumps, a renewal of a centralised biennial rate contract for Yokogawa oxygen analyser spares, a biennial rate contract with Mellcon Engineers for drier spares, a renewal with Diamond Power Speciality for soot blower spares on an original equipment and original equipment supplier basis, and a rate contract for spares from WAM India across NTPC stations.

Who should act

Original equipment manufacturers, distributors and aftermarket spares suppliers. A rate contract across all stations replaces dozens of station level orders with one negotiation. For a maker it is a step change in volume certainty. For a distributor it is an exclusion, because the contract is written to the maker on an original equipment basis.

Next step

If you distribute rather than manufacture, the aftermarket channel into NTPC is closing. Check whether your category is already under a centralised rate contract before you plan against it.

The Window

The Operator · The Multinational Mandate

Renovation and modernisation of an 11 kV unit and station board

Renovation and modernisation of a Stage 1 11 kV unit and station switchboard, published 7 October, closing 30 October 2026.

Renovation and modernisation is the category that matters here. It is life extension capital on an old unit rather than maintenance, and it signals the station is being kept running.

Who should act

Switchgear manufacturers and electrical contractors.

Next step

Renovation and modernisation is a different budget line from maintenance. If you track only maintenance tenders you will miss the life extension spend entirely.

Dates to mark

Closes 30 October 2026.

The Number

The Operator · The Growth Driver · The Multinational Mandate

Twenty six to twenty seven

Several live tenders carry the financial year in the requirement itself: capital spare turbine driven boiler feed pump main pump mechanical seals for 2026-27, and a differential pressure reducing valve for 500 MW generators drawn against the 2026-27 capital budget at Korba.

Who should act

Capital spares suppliers to thermal generation. This financial year's capital spares are being placed now, which means the window for being on the vendor list for them is already closing. The next one opens in April.

Next step

If you are not already on the vendor list for these categories, this financial year is gone. Register now for the April cycle.

The Pattern ◆

Across the board the same contract shapes repeat: biennial maintenance contracts, comprehensive annual maintenance contracts, triennial contracts, biennial rate contracts, biennial service contracts, deputation of a named manufacturer's service engineer, and condition monitoring systems installed on switchgear and turbines.

A continuous online temperature monitoring system is going onto high tension switchgear at Darlipalli. A two year service contract covers the turbine supervisory instrumentation at Tanda. A vibration expert is being deployed for a turbine overhaul at Kahalgaon.

Who should act

Component makers, condition monitoring firms and industrial service providers. The sale is a monitored availability commitment over two to three years. Firms that can instrument, monitor and dispatch an engineer will take the category from firms that can only ship.

Next step

The sale is no longer a part. It is a monitored availability commitment over two to three years, so build the monitoring and the field engineer into the price before you quote.
